Understand your salary in three ways

A yearly figure can feel abstract. The base salary calculator on this site lets you read the same pay as a year, a week, and an hour, all on a standard 38-hour week. It also shows how your weekly pay compares to the national full-time adult ordinary-time average, so you know exactly where you sit.

What the calculator does

Enter your yearly salary before tax. The tool divides by 52 to give a weekly amount, then by 38 to give an hourly rate. It then compares your weekly pay to the ABS Average Weekly Earnings figure for May 2026: $2,083.70 a week, or about $108,352 a year. The result is a simple line: above, below, or right on it.

This is not a budget planner or a tax estimator. It is a straight conversion that shows your income in the same units as the national average. If you are paid a salary, this is your base rate before overtime, bonuses, or allowances.

Where the figures come from

The national full-time average is from the Australian Bureau of Statistics Average Weekly Earnings series, May 2026. It covers full-time adult employees in ordinary-time earnings, before tax. The site uses 52 weeks to annualise, which is standard for salary comparisons.

For context, the full-time median from the ABS Employee Earnings survey (August 2025) is about $90,532 a year. The all-employees median is about $74,100. The average is higher because it includes very high incomes. The calculator uses the average because it is the most widely cited benchmark.

State full-time averages are also available. For example, New South Wales is about $109,658, Victoria about $106,137, Queensland about $106,064, South Australia about $102,450, Western Australia about $115,825, Tasmania about $96,008, the Northern Territory about $103,173, and the Australian Capital Territory about $119,090. You can see how your state compares on the states and territories page.

Why a 38-hour week?

The standard full-time week in Australia is 38 hours, as set by the Fair Work Act. The calculator uses this for the hourly conversion. If you work a different number of hours, your effective hourly rate will differ. The tool is designed for the typical full-time employee.

How the minimum wage fits in

The national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 an hour, $1,004.90 a week, or about $52,255 a year on 38 hours. Award minimums rose 4.75% from that date. If your salary is below the minimum for your classification, you may be underpaid. The calculator does not check awards, but you can use the hourly rate it shows to compare against the relevant award rate.

Tax and take-home pay

The calculator shows your salary before tax. For an estimate of tax, the 2026–27 resident rates are: nil on the first $18,200, 15% on income up to $45,000, 30% up to $135,000, 37% up to $190,000, and 45% above that. The Medicare levy adds 2% (reductions may apply). Your take-home pay will be lower than the figures shown.

Using the calculator to benchmark your salary

If you are negotiating a pay rise or considering a job offer, the base salary calculator gives you a quick reference. Enter the proposed salary and see the weekly and hourly figures. Compare your weekly pay to the national average. If you are below $2,083.70 a week, you are below the full-time average. If you are above, you are above it.

Remember that averages vary by industry and occupation. The job medians page lists typical earnings for many roles, and industry medians shows sector-level figures. These are medians, not averages, so they are less affected by very high or low incomes.

Limitations of the calculator

The calculator uses a single national average. It does not adjust for location, experience, or industry. For a more detailed picture, look at the state averages or the occupation-specific data. The tool is a starting point, not a full salary analysis.

Also, the ABS Average Weekly Earnings is published twice a year, for May and November. The figure used here is from May 2026. It will be updated when the November 2026 release is available. The how the figures are set page explains the methodology.

Putting your salary on the line

The core feature of this site is the line: the national full-time average. The base salary calculator is the way to place a salary on the line. You can see exactly how your pay compares, in weekly terms, to the benchmark. This is useful for anyone who wants a clear, no-nonsense comparison.

Summary

The base salary calculator converts your yearly salary into weekly and hourly amounts on a 38-hour week and compares it to the national full-time average of $108,352 a year ($2,083.70 a week). It uses authoritative ABS data and Fair Work definitions. Use it to understand your pay in different timeframes and to see where you stand against the average Australian full-time worker.

Questions

How does the base salary calculator work?

The calculator takes your yearly salary before tax and divides it by 52 to get a weekly amount, then by 38 to get an hourly rate. It also compares your weekly pay to the national full-time adult ordinary-time average from the ABS Average Weekly Earnings, May 2026, which is $2,083.70 a week or about $108,352 a year. The result shows whether you are above or below that line.

What is the difference between the average and the median in the calculator?

The calculator uses the full-time average from ABS Average Weekly Earnings. The full-time median, from ABS Employee Earnings, August 2025, is about $90,532 a year. The all-employees median is about $74,100. The average is higher because it is pulled up by high earners. The calculator only shows distance from the average, not the median.

Does the calculator include tax or the minimum wage?

No, the calculator shows your salary before tax. For tax estimates, refer to the 2026–27 resident tax rates: nil up to $18,200, then 15% to $45,000, 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000, and 45% above that, plus the 2% Medicare levy. The national minimum wage from Fair Work (1 July 2026) is $26.44 an hour, $1,004.90 a week, or about $52,255 a year on 38 hours. Award minimums rose 4.75% from that date.
