What is the difference between a wage and a salary?

In Australia, the terms "wage" and "salary" are often used interchangeably, but they have a practical difference in how pay is quoted and calculated. A wage is usually expressed as an hourly or weekly rate, while a salary is an annual figure. The Fair Work Ombudsman sets the National Minimum Wage at $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week as of 1 July 2026. Salaries, on the other hand, are typically negotiated as a yearly amount, such as the national full-time adult ordinary-time average of $108,352 per year (ABS Average Weekly Earnings, May 2026).

This distinction matters when you use our tool to place a salary on the line. You enter your annual salary before tax, and we convert it to a weekly figure (dividing by 52) and an hourly figure (dividing by 38 hours, the standard full-time week). We then show how your pay compares to the ABS full-time average. If you are paid a wage, you can still use the tool by multiplying your hourly rate by 38 and then by 52 to get an equivalent annual salary.

How the national averages are calculated

The ABS publishes Average Weekly Earnings twice a year, for May and November. The May 2026 release shows full-time adult ordinary-time earnings at $2,083.70 per week (seasonally adjusted), an annual increase of 3.7%. This is the benchmark we use as "the line." The ABS also provides medians: the full-time median is about $90,532 per year, and the all-employees median is about $74,100 per year (ABS Employee Earnings, August 2025). These medians give a different picture because they are less affected by very high incomes.

Men's full-time ordinary-time average is about $113,412 per year, and women's is about $100,594 per year. State averages vary: New South Wales full-time average about $109,658, Victoria about $106,137, Queensland about $106,064, South Australia about $102,450, Western Australia about $115,825, Tasmania about $96,008, Northern Territory about $103,173, and the Australian Capital Territory about $119,090. You can explore these differences on our states and territories page.

Wages, salaries, and the minimum wage

The Fair Work Ombudsman explains that the National Minimum Wage applies to employees not covered by an award or registered agreement. Award minimums rose by 4.75% in the 2026 Annual Wage Review. If you are covered by an award, your minimum wage may be higher than the national minimum. The key point is that wages are often set by the hour or week, while salaries are annual. This is the core difference between a wage and a salary.

When you use our tool, you can see your pay as a year, a week, and an hour. This helps you understand where you sit relative to the full-time average, regardless of whether your pay is called a wage or a salary. For example, if you earn $1,200 per week, that is about $62,400 per year, which is below the full-time average. If you earn $100,000 per year, that is about $1,923 per week and $50.63 per hour.

Tax and take-home pay

The ATO sets the 2026–27 tax rates: nil on the first $18,200, 15% on income up to $45,000, 30% up to $135,000, 37% up to $190,000, and 45% above that. The Medicare levy adds 2% (with possible reductions). Whether you are paid a wage or a salary, your annual gross income is taxed the same way. The difference between a wage and a salary does not change your tax obligations.

Using the tool

To see where your pay sits, place a salary on the line. Enter your yearly salary before tax. The tool will show your weekly and hourly equivalents and the distance from the ABS full-time average. You can also compare to medians and the minimum wage. Remember that the average is $108,352 per year, but many people earn less or more. The tool is designed to give you a clear picture of your pay in context.

Summary

The difference between a wage and a salary is mainly about the reference period: wages are hourly or weekly, salaries are annual. Both are treated as ordinary income for tax purposes. The ABS and Fair Work provide the data you need to compare your pay to national benchmarks. Use our tool to see your pay as a year, a week, and an hour, and understand where you stand.

Questions

What is the difference between a wage and a salary?

A wage is typically paid by the hour or week, while a salary is an annual amount. The Fair Work Ombudsman states the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week. Salaries are often expressed as a yearly figure, such as the full-time average of $108,352. The key difference is the reference period: wages are usually hourly or weekly, salaries are annual.

How does the site compare my salary to the national average?

You enter your yearly salary before tax. The tool divides it by 52 to get a weekly figure and by 38 (standard full-time hours) to get an hourly rate. It then shows how far your pay is from the ABS Average Weekly Earnings full-time adult ordinary-time average of $2,083.70 per week. Medians and minimum wages are shown separately.

Does the difference between a wage and a salary affect my tax?

No, the ATO treats both as ordinary income. The 2026–27 tax rates apply to all employment income: nil up to $18,200, then 15%, 30%, 37%, and 45% plus the 2% Medicare levy. Whether you are paid a wage or a salary, your annual gross income is taxed the same way.
