Finance business partner salary: reading the same pay as a year, a week and an hour
A finance business partner works closely with business leaders to provide financial insights, planning and analysis. It is a senior role that typically sits above an accountant but below a finance director. Because the title covers a range of experience levels and industries, the ABS does not publish a single official figure for a finance business partner salary. However, you can compare any salary you have in mind against the national benchmarks that are available.
The national full-time average
The Australian Bureau of Statistics publishes Average Weekly Earnings twice a year, for May and November. The latest release, for May 2026, gives the full-time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings as $2,083.70. On a 38‑hour week that works out to about $54.83 an hour. Over 52 weeks the yearly equivalent is roughly $108,352. This is the line that this site uses as the national full-time average.
If you are a finance business partner earning above that figure, you are above the average for all full-time adults in Australia. If you earn below it, you are below that average. The gap is shown in the on‑site tool when you place a salary on the line.
Medians give another perspective
The average can be pulled up by very high earners. The median is the middle point: half of workers earn more, half earn less. According to the ABS Employee Earnings and Hours survey from August 2025, the full-time median weekly earnings were about $1,741 (roughly $90,532 a year). For all employees (including part‑time and casual), the median was about $1,425 a week ($74,100 a year). A finance business partner role is usually full‑time and senior, so the full‑time median is the more relevant comparison.
The minimum wage as a floor
Fair Work sets the national minimum wage. From 1 July 2026 it is $26.44 an hour, $1,004.90 a week, or about $52,255 a year on a 38‑hour week. Award minimums rose by 4.75% at the same time. A finance business partner salary will be well above the minimum wage, but it is useful to know the legal floor when negotiating.
State and territory averages
Where you work also matters. The ABS Average Weekly Earnings, May 2026, provides full-time adult ordinary time earnings by state. The yearly equivalents (×52) are:
- New South Wales: about $109,658
- Victoria: about $106,137
- Queensland: about $106,064
- South Australia: about $102,450
- Western Australia: about $115,825
- Tasmania: about $96,008
- Northern Territory: about $103,173
- Australian Capital Territory: about $119,090
If you work in the ACT or Western Australia, the local average is higher than the national figure. In Tasmania it is lower. You can see all state figures on the States and territories page.
How to read your own salary
The on‑site tool accepts a yearly salary before tax. It converts that to a weekly amount (divide by 52) and an hourly amount (divide by 52 and then by 38). It then shows the distance from the national full-time average of $2,083.70 a week. That distance can be expressed as a dollar amount or a percentage above or below the line.
For example, if you earn $120,000 a year, that is about $2,307.69 a week, which is $224 above the average. If you earn $95,000 a year, that is about $1,826.92 a week, which is $256.78 below the average.
What about tax?
The tool shows pre‑tax figures. For the 2026–27 income year, resident tax rates are: nil on the first $18,200, 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000, 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000, 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000, and 45% on income above $190,000. The Medicare levy of 2% applies before any reductions. A finance business partner on $120,000 would fall in the 30% bracket plus Medicare, so the marginal rate is 32%.
Where to find more specific data
The ABS does not publish a salary for finance business partner as a separate occupation. The closest categories in the ABS classification are likely "Finance Manager" or "Accountant". The Job medians page lists median weekly earnings for these and other roles based on the Employee Earnings and Hours survey. That survey is from August 2025, so it is the most recent detailed occupational data available.
If you have a specific salary in mind, you can enter it into the tool and see exactly where it sits. The How the figures are set page explains the methodology behind the averages and medians.
Summary
A finance business partner salary is not published as a single figure by the ABS, Fair Work or the ATO. The best way to assess it is to compare it to the national full-time average of $108,352 a year ($2,083.70 a week, $54.83 an hour). Use the on‑site tool to see the gap for your own salary, and check the job medians page for related roles. The state averages also help you understand how location affects pay.
