Investment Banker Salary: Placing It on the Line
This tool helps you see where any salary sits against the Australian full-time adult average. For an investment banker salary, the first thing to know is that the Australian Bureau of Statistics does not publish a separate figure for that specific role. Instead, we can draw on related data to give you a sense of the range.
The National Full-Time Average
The ABS Average Weekly Earnings survey for May 2026 puts the national full-time adult ordinary time average at $2,083.70 per week, or about $108,352 per year (multiplied by 52). This is the line that the tool uses as its benchmark. Place a salary on the line to see how any figure compares.
What We Know About Investment Banker Pay
Investment bankers typically work in the Financial and Insurance Services industry. While the ABS does not break out this occupation separately, the Employee Earnings and Hours survey from May 2025 provides useful proxies:
- The Managers occupation (which includes many senior financial roles) had an average hourly total cash earnings of $69.20. On a 38-hour week, that works out to about $2,629.60 per week, or $136,739 per year.
- The Professionals occupation averaged $64.50 per hour, or about $2,451 per week ($127,452 per year).
These are averages across all industries, so investment bankers – who are concentrated in high-paying financial centres – may earn more. The full-time median for all employees was $1,887 per week ($98,124 per year) in August 2025, while the top quartile for full-time male employees was $2,741 per week ($142,532 per year).
State and Sector Differences
Where you work matters. The national full-time average hides large variations by state and sector. For example:
- New South Wales full-time average: $2,108.80 per week ($109,658 per year)
- Victoria: $2,041.10 per week ($106,137 per year)
- Western Australia: $2,227.40 per week ($115,825 per year)
- Australian Capital Territory: $2,290.20 per week ($119,090 per year)
Investment banking roles are concentrated in Sydney and Melbourne, which may push pay above state averages. The public sector average is higher than private ($2,263.10 vs $2,034.10 per week for full-time ordinary time), but most investment bankers are in the private sector.
Using the Tool
The tool accepts a yearly salary before tax and shows the equivalent weekly and hourly amounts (based on a 38-hour week), plus the distance from the full-time average. You can also compare against industry medians or occupation medians from the ABS Employee Earnings survey.
Tax and Take-Home Pay
For the 2026–27 financial year, resident tax rates are:
- Nil on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% above $190,000
Plus a 2% Medicare levy (before any reductions). An investment banker earning $200,000 would fall into the 37% bracket on most of their income, with the top $10,000 taxed at 45%.
The Bottom Line
While no single "investment banker salary" figure exists in official statistics, the available data suggests that experienced investment bankers earn well above the national full-time average of $108,352. The Managers occupation average of $136,739 per year is a reasonable floor, and top quartile figures point to $142,532 or more.
