Management consultant salary: reading the same pay as a year, a week and an hour
If you are a management consultant in Australia, you may be wondering how your pay compares to the national average. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) does not publish a specific average or median weekly earnings figure for the occupation of Management Consultant (ANZSCO 224711). Jobs and Skills Australia also notes that median weekly earnings are not available for this six-digit occupation. That means there is no single official number to point to. However, you can still use the national benchmarks to see where your own salary sits.
The national full-time average as a reference point
The ABS Average Weekly Earnings survey for May 2026 gives the national full-time adult ordinary-time average as $2,083.70 per week. Multiplied by 52, that is about $108,352 per year. This is the figure we call the line on this site. It is an average of all full-time adult employees across all industries and occupations, before tax. It is not a median and it is not specific to management consultants, but it provides a useful yardstick.
For comparison, the full-time median weekly earnings (from the ABS Employee Earnings and Hours survey, August 2025) are lower: about $1,741 per week, or $90,532 per year. The all-employees median (including part-time) is about $1,425 per week, or $74,100 per year. These medians give a sense of the middle of the distribution, while the average is pulled higher by higher earners.
How management consultants typically work
According to Jobs and Skills Australia, 79% of management consultants work full-time, and the average full-time hours are 43 hours per week. That is above the standard 38-hour week used on this site. If you work 43 hours, your hourly rate based on a yearly salary will be lower than if you worked 38 hours for the same annual pay. Our tool converts your yearly salary to a weekly amount assuming a 38-hour week, so you can see the equivalent hourly rate at that standard. If you work longer hours, your actual hourly rate will be different.
Using the tool to place your salary on the line
Because there is no official management consultant salary figure, the most practical thing you can do is place your own salary on the line. Enter your yearly pre-tax salary and the tool will show you:
- Your weekly pay (based on a 38-hour week)
- Your hourly rate
- How far above or below the national full-time average you are
You can also compare your salary to the job medians for other occupations that do have published figures, or to the industry medians if you know which industry you work in.
Other benchmarks: minimum wage and tax
The national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, $1,004.90 per week, or about $52,255 per year on a 38-hour week. Award minimums rose by 4.75% in the 2026 Annual Wage Review. Management consultants are often covered by the Professional Employees Award or are above-award employees, so their pay is typically well above the minimum.
For the 2026–27 income year, the resident tax rates are:
- Nil up to $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Plus a 2% Medicare levy (before any reductions). These rates apply to your taxable income after deductions.
State and territory averages
If you work in a particular state or territory, the full-time average earnings vary. The ABS Average Weekly Earnings for May 2026 gives these annualised figures (full-time adult ordinary-time earnings):
- New South Wales: $109,658
- Victoria: $106,137
- Queensland: $106,064
- South Australia: $102,450
- Western Australia: $115,825
- Tasmania: $96,008
- Northern Territory: $103,173
- Australian Capital Territory: $119,090
You can see more detail on the states and territories page.
What this means for management consultants
Without a published average or median for your occupation, the best approach is to use the national full-time average as a baseline. If your salary is above $108,352 per year, you are above the average full-time worker. If it is below, you are below that average. But remember that the average includes all full-time adults, from entry-level to executives. Management consultants are typically experienced professionals, so many would be above the average. The median full-time earnings of $90,532 may be more representative of the typical worker, but again, management consultants often earn more than that.

Final note on data sources
The national averages and medians in this article come from the ABS. The minimum wage comes from Fair Work. The occupation profile for management consultants comes from Jobs and Skills Australia, which uses ABS Census and survey data. No single official salary figure exists for management consultants, so treat any online claims with caution. Use our tool to see where your own pay sits.
