Mechanical fitter salary: year, week and hour
If you are looking for the mechanical fitter salary in Australia, the most reliable public source is the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Average Weekly Earnings survey. The ABS does not publish a separate figure for mechanical fitters, but it does provide an average for the Manufacturing industry, which includes many mechanical fitters. For May 2026, the full-time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings in Manufacturing were $1,843.10. That works out to about $95,841 per year (multiplied by 52) and about $48.50 per hour on a 38-hour week.
How that compares to the national full-time average
The national full-time adult ordinary-time average is $2,083.70 per week, or about $108,352 per year. So the Manufacturing average is about $12,500 less per year. That means a mechanical fitter earning the industry average is below the line on this site. The gap is partly because Manufacturing includes a mix of skilled and less-skilled roles, and because award rates in some manufacturing classifications have not kept pace with the broader market.
The award minimum for a mechanical fitter
Fair Work sets minimum pay rates under the Manufacturing and Associated Industries and Occupations Award. A mechanical fitter is typically classified at Level V (C10) under that award. The minimum weekly rate for that classification, as shown in the Fair Work pay guide published in July 2026, is $940.90 per week, or about $48,927 per year. That is well below both the Manufacturing average and the national full-time average. However, many mechanical fitters are paid above the award rate, especially if they have experience or work in high-demand areas.
State-by-state differences
The national full-time average varies by state. For example, Western Australia has the highest state average at about $115,825 per year, while Tasmania has the lowest at about $96,008. If you are a mechanical fitter in WA, your pay may be closer to the national average than if you are in Tasmania. The ABS table for May 2026 shows that the full-time average in WA is $2,227.40 per week, compared to $1,846.30 in Tasmania. Place a salary on the line to see how your state compares.
How the figures are set
The national full-time average comes from the ABS Average Weekly Earnings survey, which is released twice a year (May and November). The median full-time salary is about $90,532 per year, and the all-employees median is about $74,100, based on the ABS Employee Earnings survey from August 2025. The national minimum wage is set by Fair Work each year and from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour. Award minimums rose by 4.75% in the 2026 Annual Wage Review. How the figures are set explains the methodology in more detail.
What this means for your take-home pay
If you earn the Manufacturing average of $95,841 per year, your before-tax income is about $1,843 per week. After tax and the Medicare levy (2%), your take-home pay would be roughly $1,380 per week, depending on your tax offsets. The tax rates for 2026–27 are: nil up to $18,200, 15% from $18,201 to $45,000, 30% from $45,001 to $135,000, 37% from $135,001 to $190,000, and 45% above that. So a mechanical fitter on the industry average falls in the 30% bracket.
