Minimum wage QLD and the national full-time average
The minimum wage in Queensland is the national minimum wage set by Fair Work. From 1 July 2026, that rate is $26.44 an hour, $1,004.90 a week, or about $52,255 a year on a 38-hour week. That is the legal floor for most employees not covered by an award or registered agreement.
How does that compare to the typical full-time worker in Queensland? The ABS Average Weekly Earnings for May 2026 put the Queensland full-time adult ordinary-time average at about $106,064 a year. That is more than double the minimum wage. Even the national full-time median of about $90,532 (ABS Employee Earnings, August 2025) is far above the minimum.
What would move pay above or below the average?
Pay at the minimum wage sits well below the Queensland average. To move above it, you would need to be covered by an award or enterprise agreement that sets a higher rate. Most awards already pay above the national minimum. For example, the hospitality and retail awards have higher base rates, and many include penalty rates for weekends or late nights. From 1 July 2026, award minimums rose by 4.75%, so those rates are now even higher.
Another factor is the industry you work in. Queensland has a strong mining and resources sector, where average earnings are much higher than the state average. The ABS data shows that full-time workers in mining earn well above $150,000 a year. On the other hand, industries like accommodation and food services have average earnings closer to the minimum.
Your location within Queensland also matters. The state average of $106,064 is a blend of all regions. Workers in Brisbane or the mining towns of central Queensland tend to earn more than those in regional areas with fewer high-paying jobs. But the minimum wage is the same everywhere in the state.
How the minimum wage is set
Fair Work Australia reviews the national minimum wage each year. The 2026 increase of 4.75% was applied to award minimums as well. The national minimum wage itself rose to $26.44 per hour. This is the legal minimum for employees who are not covered by any award or agreement. If you are on an award, your minimum is likely higher.
Comparing to the national line
The site's line is the national full-time adult ordinary-time average of $108,352 a year (ABS Average Weekly Earnings, May 2026, multiplied by 52). The Queensland average of $106,064 is slightly below that line. The minimum wage of $52,255 is far below both. Even the all-employees median of $74,100 is well above the minimum.
What about tax?
At the minimum wage of $52,255, your taxable income falls in the 30% bracket for 2026–27 (the 30% rate applies from $45,001 to $135,000). You also pay the Medicare levy of 2%, though low-income offsets may reduce it. After tax, a minimum-wage worker takes home roughly $42,000–$44,000 depending on their circumstances.
Summary
The minimum wage in Queensland is the national minimum wage. It is about half the state's full-time average and well below the national average line. To move your pay above the minimum, look for award coverage, enterprise agreements, or industries with higher typical earnings.
