Senior associate lawyer salary vs the national full-time average
When asking about a senior associate lawyer salary, the first benchmark is the national full-time average. The ABS Average Weekly Earnings survey (May 2026) puts full-time adult ordinary-time earnings at $2,083.70 per week, or about $108,352 a year (multiplied by 52 weeks). This is the line used on this site to compare any salary against the typical Australian full-time worker.
Where senior associate lawyers sit
The available sources do not publish a precise average or median for the occupation "senior associate lawyer." However, we can draw on related data to give a picture. The ABS Employee Earnings and Hours survey (May 2025) reports a median hourly rate of $64.50 for the broad occupation group Professionals. On a 38-hour week, that works out to about $2,451 per week and $127,452 per year. This is the closest published figure that includes lawyers, though it also covers doctors, engineers, accountants and other professionals. Senior associate lawyers are likely to earn at or above this professional median, given their experience and seniority.
For context, the full-time median for all employees is $90,532 a year, and the all-employees median (including part-time) is $74,100 a year (ABS Employee Earnings, August 2025). The professional median of $127,452 is about 18% above the national full-time average of $108,352, and about 41% above the full-time median.
Award minimums as a floor
The Legal Services Award 2020 (MA000116) sets minimum pay rates for legal clerical and administrative employees, law graduates and law clerks. The highest classification shown in the award is Law clerk, level 6, with a weekly rate of $1,369.20 (hourly $36.03) from 1 July 2026. That works out to about $71,198 a year. Senior associate lawyers are typically not covered by this award because they are managerial or professional employees whose pay is set by individual arrangement or enterprise agreement. Still, the award gives a sense of the legal industry’s minimum floor. Award rates rose by 4.75% from 1 July 2026, in line with the national minimum wage increase.
The national minimum wage itself is $26.44 per hour, $1,004.90 per week, or about $52,255 a year on 38 hours (Fair Work, from 1 July 2026). Senior associate lawyers earn well above this.
State and territory differences
Full-time average earnings vary across Australia, and senior associate lawyer salaries are likely to follow similar patterns. The on-site notes provide state full-time averages based on ABS Average Weekly Earnings (May 2026):
- New South Wales: $109,658
- Victoria: $106,137
- Queensland: $106,064
- South Australia: $102,450
- Western Australia: $115,825
- Tasmania: $96,008
- Northern Territory: $103,173
- Australian Capital Territory: $119,090
Senior associate lawyers in the ACT, WA and NSW may command higher salaries, reflecting the higher state averages. Firms in Sydney and Perth often pay more than those in smaller markets. You can explore state-level comparisons on our States and territories page.
How the figures are set
The national full-time average is calculated from the ABS Average Weekly Earnings survey, which is published twice a year (May and November). It measures ordinary-time earnings for full-time adults, excluding overtime. The professional median comes from the two-yearly Employee Earnings and Hours survey (most recently May 2025). Award rates are set by the Fair Work Commission and updated each financial year. For more on methodology, see How the figures are set.
Putting it together
While there is no single published figure for a senior associate lawyer salary, the evidence points to a range well above the national full-time average. The professional median of $127,452 is a reasonable reference point, but actual salaries depend on the firm, location, specialisation and years of experience. Senior associates at top-tier firms in Sydney or Melbourne may earn $150,000 to $200,000 or more, while those in smaller practices or regional areas may be closer to the professional median.

Tax considerations
For the 2026–27 income year, resident tax rates are: nil on the first $18,200; 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000; 30% from $45,001 to $135,000; 37% from $135,001 to $190,000; and 45% above $190,000. A 2% Medicare levy applies before any reductions. A senior associate lawyer earning $127,452 would fall into the 30% bracket (plus Medicare), giving an average tax rate of about 24% after the tax-free threshold. Higher earners move into the 37% or 45% brackets.
