What is Smart Salary?

Smart Salary is a secure online portal that gives you a clear picture of your pay. After you log in, the tool converts your annual salary before tax into a weekly and hourly figure based on a standard 38-hour week. It then places your pay on the national full-time average line, so you can instantly see whether you are above, below, or right on the benchmark.

The service is designed for Australian workers who want to understand their earnings in context. No complicated spreadsheets or manual lookups are needed. The figures come directly from trusted sources: the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) for averages and medians, and Fair Work for minimum wages.

How Your Pay Measures Up

Yearly, Weekly, Hourly

Once you log in, Smart Salary shows your salary in three formats:

  • Yearly: your gross annual salary before tax.
  • Weekly: your yearly salary divided by 52.
  • Hourly: your weekly salary divided by 38 (the standard full-time week).

This makes it easy to compare your pay with published benchmarks. For example, the national full-time adult ordinary-time average is $2,083.70 per week, or about $108,352 a year, according to the ABS Average Weekly Earnings survey for May 2026. If your weekly pay is $2,200, you are above the average. If it is $1,800, you are below.

Against the National Full-Time Average

The site’s central line is the full-time average. Smart Salary highlights the distance between your pay and this line. The average is updated twice a year when the ABS releases new data (May and November). The current figure comes from the May 2026 release.

It is important to note that the average is not the same as the median. The full-time median weekly earnings were about $1,887 per week in August 2025 (ABS Employee Earnings and Hours), which translates to roughly $98,124 a year. The median for all employees (including part-time) was $1,436 per week, or about $74,672 a year. The average is higher because it is pulled up by high earners. Smart Salary shows both the average and the median so you can see where you sit on the distribution.

Medians and Minimum Wage

In addition to the full-time average, Smart Salary compares your pay to:

  • Full-time median: about $1,887 per week (ABS Employee Earnings, August 2025).
  • All-employees median: about $1,436 per week.
  • National minimum wage: $26.44 per hour, $1,004.90 per week, about $52,255 a year (Fair Work, from 1 July 2026).
  • Award minimums: rose by 4.75% from 1 July 2026.

If your hourly rate is below $26.44, you may be entitled to a pay rise. Smart Salary can flag this.

State and Territory Comparisons

Your pay also varies by where you work. Smart Salary lets you compare your salary against the full-time average for your state or territory. The averages from the ABS for May 2026 are:

  • New South Wales: about $109,658 a year
  • Victoria: about $106,137
  • Queensland: about $106,064
  • South Australia: about $102,450
  • Western Australia: about $115,825
  • Tasmania: about $96,008
  • Northern Territory: about $103,173
  • Australian Capital Territory: about $119,090

These are full-time adult ordinary-time averages. If you live in the ACT, the average is higher than the national figure. In Tasmania, it is lower. Smart Salary adjusts the comparison based on your location. You can explore all states on the States and territories page.

Tax and Take-Home Pay

Smart Salary does not calculate tax, but it shows your gross pay. For a rough idea of tax, you can use the 2026–27 resident tax rates:

  • Nil up to $18,200
  • 15% from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% above $190,000

Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (reductions may apply). Your take-home pay will be lower than the gross figures shown. For a detailed breakdown, see the Guides section.
