Understanding your take-home pay
When you use the take home pay calculator on this site, you enter your yearly salary before tax. The tool then shows you that same pay as a weekly figure (based on a 38-hour week) and an hourly rate. It also tells you how your salary compares to the national full-time average. This makes it easy to see your earnings in different time frames and to understand where you sit relative to other Australian workers.
What the tool shows
The calculator uses the ABS Average Weekly Earnings for May 2026 as its benchmark. The national full-time adult ordinary-time average is $2,083.70 per week, or about $108,352 per year. If your salary is above that line, you earn more than the typical full-time worker; if below, you earn less. The tool also displays the median full-time salary ($90,532 per year) and the median for all employees ($74,100 per year), both from the ABS Employee Earnings survey for August 2025. These medians give you a sense of the middle point of earnings, which can be different from the average because high incomes pull the average up.
Estimating your take-home pay
The tool shows gross (before-tax) figures. To estimate your after-tax income, you need to apply the 2026–27 tax rates and the Medicare levy. The ATO sets these rates: no tax on the first $18,200, then 15% up to $45,000, 30% up to $135,000, 37% up to $190,000, and 45% above that. The Medicare levy adds 2% on top (with possible reductions for low-income earners). For example, if your gross salary is $90,000, your tax would be roughly $19,867 plus $1,800 Medicare levy, leaving about $68,333 take-home. But the exact amount depends on your circumstances, such as deductions or offsets. The ATO’s own calculator can give you a precise figure.
How your salary compares by state
The national average hides big differences between states and territories. The states and territories page shows the full-time average for each jurisdiction. For example, the Australian Capital Territory has the highest average at $119,090 per year, while Tasmania is lower at $96,008. Western Australia also has a high average of $115,825, and the national average is $108,108. If you live in a state with a lower average, your salary may still be above the local average even if it is below the national line. The tool uses the same national average for each state, so you can see how your pay compares both nationally and locally.
The minimum wage and award rates
Fair Work sets the national minimum wage from 1 July 2026: $26.44 per hour, $1,004.9 per week, about $52,255 per year on 38 hours. Award minimums rose 4.75% from 2026. The tool does not show the minimum wage, but you can still enter your salary to see how it compares to the average. The minimum is much lower than the average, so many workers earn above the minimum.
Reading your pay as a week and hour
The key angle of this site is to read the same pay as a year, a week, and an hour. The tool shows the same figure in all three forms. If you enter $108,352, it shows $2,083.7 a week and $26.44 per hour. If you enter a different salary, you see the same conversion. This helps you understand your earnings in the way you think about them. For example, a $90,000 salary is about $1,730 a week and $45.5 per hour. The tool also shows distance from the line, so you see how far above or below the average.
About this site
This site uses the ABS, Fair Work, and the ATO. The figures are set by the ABS and Fair Work. The average is ABS Average Weekly Earnings, May 2026. Medians are ABS Employee earnings, August 2025. The minimum wage is Fair Work, from 1 July 2026. The tool uses these sources to keep the full-time average, medians, and minimum wage distinct.
Conclusion
Use the take home pay calculator to see your salary as a year, a week, and an hour. Compare to the national average, medians, and state averages. Then estimate your after-tax income using the tax rates and Medicare levy. This gives you a clear picture of where your pay sits in the Australian context.
