What is a rehab consultant?
A rehab consultant – also called a rehabilitation consultant – works with people recovering from injury, illness, or disability to help them return to work or daily life. The role is common in health care, insurance, and government settings. Because the title covers a range of duties and employers, there is no single published salary figure from the ABS, Fair Work, or the ATO.
The national full-time average as the line
The Australian Bureau of Statistics publishes the national full-time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings twice a year. In May 2026, that figure was $2,083.70 per week, or about $108,352 a year (multiplied by 52 weeks). This is the reference line used on this site. Place a salary on the line to see how any figure compares.
For context, the full-time median (the middle point of all full-time earnings) was about $90,532 a year in August 2025, and the all-employees median was about $74,100. The national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 an hour, or $52,255 a year on a 38-hour week.
Where does a rehab consultant salary sit?
The ABS does not break out "rehab consultant" as a separate occupation. The closest industry category is health care and social assistance, where full-time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings were $2,037.20 in May 2026 – that's about $105,934 a year, or roughly $2,400 below the national full-time average. Industry medians show that health care and social assistance is one of the largest employing industries in Australia, with a wide range of roles.
Within health care, many rehab consultants are classified as professionals. The ABS Employee Earnings and Hours survey (May 2025) reported that professionals had median hourly earnings of $64.50. If a rehab consultant worked 38 hours a week at that rate, annual pay would be about **$127,764 a year – well above the national average. However, not all rehab consultants are paid at the professional median; some may be on awards or individual agreements.
Because the role spans public and private sectors, pay can differ. In the public sector, full-time health care workers earned an average of $2,474.10 per week in May 2026, while private sector health care workers earned $1,875.50. A rehab consultant in a public hospital or government agency may earn more than one in a private clinic.
Take-home pay sketch
Using the 2026–27 resident tax rates, here is an approximate take-home calculation for a rehab consultant earning the national full-time average of $108,352:
- Tax-free threshold: $0 on first $18,200
- 15% on $18,201 to $45,000: tax $4,020
- 30% on $45,001 to $135,000: tax on $63,352 = $19,005.60
- Total tax before Medicare: $23,025.60
- Medicare levy (2%): $2,167.04
- Total deductions: $25,192.64
- Take-home pay: about $83,159 per year (or $1,599 per week)
If the rehab consultant earns the health care industry average of $105,934, take-home would be slightly lower. If they earn at the professional median hourly rate ($64.50), annual pay of $127,764 would fall into the 30% bracket but with higher tax, leaving about $93,000 take-home.
Actual take-home depends on deductions, HELP repayments, and other factors. The figures above are a sketch only.
State comparisons
Full-time average weekly ordinary time earnings vary by state and territory. A rehab consultant working in the ACT, where the full-time average is about $119,090 a year, may earn more than one in Tasmania, where the average is about $96,008. States and territories provides a full breakdown.
| State/Territory | Full-time average annual earnings (approx.) |

| Australian Capital Territory | $119,090 |
| Western Australia | $115,825 |
| New South Wales | $109,658 |

| Queensland | $106,064 |
| Northern Territory | $103,173 |
| South Australia | $102,450 |

These are averages across all industries, not specific to rehab consultants. But they give a sense of regional pay differences.
How the figures are set
The national full-time average comes from the ABS Average Weekly Earnings survey, which samples employers. It is not a median or a minimum. The minimum wage is set by Fair Work and reviewed annually. Award rates for health care professionals may also apply. How the figures are set explains the methodology.
Conclusion
While there is no single published salary for a rehab consultant, the health care and social assistance industry average of $105,934 provides a useful benchmark. That figure is about 2% below the national full-time average of $108,352. Depending on the employer, sector, and location, a rehab consultant could earn more or less.
