See your salary as a year, a week and an hour
When you use the salary calculator on this site, you enter a yearly salary before tax. The tool then shows you that same pay as a weekly amount and an hourly rate, based on a standard 38-hour week. It also tells you how far your salary sits from the national full-time average.
This is different from a salary calculator you might find on a job site such as Seek. Seek provides estimates based on advertised roles, but this site uses official data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), Fair Work, and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). The national full-time average here is the ABS Average Weekly Earnings, May 2026: $2,083.70 a week, or about $108,352 a year. That is the line the calculator compares your salary against.
What the calculator shows
The calculator accepts a yearly salary before tax. It does not ask for a login, an award search, or a tax return. It simply converts your annual figure into a weekly rate (divide by 52) and an hourly rate (divide the weekly rate by 38). It then calculates the difference between your weekly salary and the national full-time average.
For example, if you earn $90,000 a year, the calculator shows that as about $1,730.77 a week and $45.55 an hour. That is $352.93 a week below the national full-time average. If you earn $120,000 a year, that is about $2,307.69 a week and $60.73 an hour, which is $223.99 a week above the average.
Where the figures come from
The national full-time average is the ABS Average Weekly Earnings, May 2026. This is published twice a year, for May and November, not every quarter. The full-time median is about $90,532 a year, and the all-employees median is about $74,100 a year, from the ABS Employee Earnings, August 2025. The national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 an hour, $1,004.90 a week, or about $52,255 a year on 38 hours. Award minimums rose 4.75% at the same time.
State full-time averages are also available on this site. For example, New South Wales is about $109,658 a year, Victoria about $106,137, Queensland about $106,064, South Australia about $102,450, Western Australia about $115,825, Tasmania about $96,008, the Northern Territory about $103,173, and the Australian Capital Territory about $119,090. These are all full-time adult ordinary-time averages from the same ABS release.
How to use the calculator
You can place a salary on the line to see where it sits against the national average. You can also explore states and territories to compare your pay with the average in your state. For a deeper look at how different jobs compare, see the job medians page, or for industry comparisons, see industry medians.
The calculator is designed to be simple. You do not need to know your award classification or your tax bracket. The tool only shows before-tax figures. If you want to estimate your take-home pay, you can refer to the 2026–27 resident tax rates: nil up to $18,200; 15% from $18,201 to $45,000; 30% from $45,001 to $135,000; 37% from $135,001 to $190,000; and 45% above $190,000. The Medicare levy is 2% before any reductions.
Why the three views matter
Reading the same pay as a year, a week, and an hour helps you understand your salary in different contexts. A yearly figure is useful for budgeting and comparing job offers. A weekly figure matches how many people are paid. An hourly figure is helpful if you work overtime or part-time hours. The calculator makes all three clear at once.
This site does not use Seek's salary data or any other commercial estimates. It relies on the ABS, Fair Work, and the ATO. The figures are updated when new official data is released. For more detail on how the figures are set, see How the figures are set. You can also read guides on understanding your pay and the Australian wage system.
Keeping the averages and medians distinct
It is important to know the difference between an average and a median. The national full-time average of $108,352 is the mean of all full-time adult ordinary-time earnings. The full-time median of $90,532 is the middle point: half of full-time workers earn more, half earn less. The all-employees median of $74,100 includes part-time and casual workers. The calculator compares your salary to the average, not the median, because the average is the line this site tracks.
Men's full-time average is about $113,412 a year, and women's is about $100,594. These are also from the ABS Average Weekly Earnings, May 2026. The calculator does not ask for your gender; it simply shows the distance from the overall national average.
What the calculator does not do
The tool does not search for awards, calculate tax, or give a net pay figure. It does not require you to log in or provide personal information. It is a straightforward converter that shows your yearly salary in weekly and hourly terms, and compares it to the national full-time average. If you want to know how your salary compares to others in your occupation or industry, you can visit the job medians or industry medians pages.
