Using the SEEK salary calculator

The SEEK salary calculator is a free online tool that lets you see how a yearly salary stacks up against the national full-time average. You enter a figure before tax, and it instantly converts that to a weekly and hourly rate based on a standard 38-hour week. It also shows the dollar difference between your salary and the average, so you can tell at a glance whether you are above, below, or right on the line.

What the calculator does not do

The calculator does not ask for your name, employer, or login details. It does not search for jobs or awards. It simply takes the number you provide and compares it to the ABS Average Weekly Earnings figure for full-time adult ordinary-time earnings. That figure is $2,083.70 a week, or about $108,352 a year, as published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics for May 2026. The tool uses this single benchmark and nothing else.

How to interpret the result

If your salary is higher than $108,352, the calculator will show a positive distance from the average. If it is lower, the distance will be negative. The weekly and hourly breakdowns help you see the real-world value of that salary. For example, a salary of $90,000 a year works out to about $1,730.77 a week and $45.55 an hour, which is roughly $18,352 below the full-time average. A salary of $120,000 a year is about $2,307.69 a week and $60.73 an hour, or $11,648 above the average.

The national full-time average in context

The $108,352 average is the mean for full-time adult employees in ordinary-time work, excluding overtime. It is not a median. The ABS Employee Earnings survey for August 2025 gives a full-time median of about $90,532 and an all-employees median of about $74,100. The average is pulled up by higher earners, so most full-time workers earn less than the average. The calculator’s comparison is to the mean, not the median.

Men’s full-time ordinary-time average is about $113,412; women’s is about $100,594. These are also from the ABS Average Weekly Earnings release. The calculator does not break down by gender, but the overall average sits between the two.

State and territory averages

If you want to see how a salary compares in your part of the country, the calculator uses the national average only. But the ABS publishes state-level full-time averages as well. For May 2026, the state figures are:

  • New South Wales: $109,658
  • Victoria: $106,137
  • Queensland: $106,064
  • South Australia: $102,450
  • Western Australia: $115,825
  • Tasmania: $96,008
  • Northern Territory: $103,173
  • Australian Capital Territory: $119,090

These are annualised from weekly figures. If you live in Western Australia or the ACT, the national average of $108,352 is lower than your state average. In Tasmania, it is higher. The calculator does not adjust for location, but you can keep these numbers in mind when interpreting your result.

The minimum wage and award rates

Fair Work sets the national minimum wage. From 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 an hour, $1,004.90 a week, or about $52,255 a year on a 38-hour week. Award minimums rose by 4.75% at the same time. The calculator does not check whether a salary meets award conditions; it only compares to the average. If you are on the minimum wage, your salary is about $56,097 below the full-time average.

Tax and take-home pay

The calculator shows figures before tax. For the 2026–27 income year, the resident tax rates are: nil up to $18,200; 15% from $18,201 to $45,000; 30% from $45,001 to $135,000; 37% from $135,001 to $190,000; and 45% above $190,000. A Medicare levy of 2% applies before any reductions. To estimate your after-tax income, you would need to apply these rates separately. The calculator does not do that.

Why use the calculator?

It is a quick way to benchmark a salary offer, a current wage, or a desired figure. Because it uses the official ABS average, you can trust the comparison. It is especially useful when negotiating a raise or evaluating a job ad that lists a yearly salary. You can also use it to see how your pay has changed relative to the average over time, though the average is updated only twice a year (May and November).

A note on accuracy

The calculator’s result is only as good as the number you enter. It does not account for overtime, bonuses, or non-salary benefits. It assumes a 38-hour week, which is the standard for full-time work in Australia. If your ordinary hours are different, the hourly rate shown will not match your actual hourly wage. The tool is a guide, not a substitute for professional advice.

Summary

The SEEK salary calculator is a straightforward way to measure any yearly salary against the national full-time average of $108,352. It gives you weekly and hourly equivalents and a clear distance from the line. Use it alongside the state averages, medians, and minimum wage to get a full picture of where your pay stands.
