Understanding the Australia Salary Calculator
The Australia salary calculator is a simple tool that shows where your yearly pay sits against the national full-time average. Enter your salary before tax, and it calculates your weekly and hourly amounts based on a 38-hour week. It then shows the distance from the national line – how much above or below you are.
This line is not a median or a minimum. It is the full-time adult ordinary-time average from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The calculator does not ask for a login, search for awards, or calculate your tax return. It is a straightforward comparison.
How the National Line Is Set
The national line comes from the ABS Average Weekly Earnings survey, May 2026. For full-time adult employees in ordinary-time work, the average weekly earnings are $2,083.70. Multiplied by 52 weeks, that gives an annual salary of about $108,352 per year.
It is important to keep this figure separate from other measures. The full-time median full-time earnings are about $90,532 per year (ABS Employee Earnings, August 2025). The all-employees median, which includes part-time and casual workers, is about $74,100. The average is higher than the median because high earners pull the average up.
Men's full-time ordinary-time average is about $113,412, and women's is about $100,594. The calculator uses the overall average, not a gender-specific figure.
Why State Averages Move the Figure Off the National Line
If you live in a state with a higher or lower average than the national figure, your pay might look different when compared to the national line. The calculator uses the national average, but your state's average may be quite different.
For example, the Australian Capital Territory has the highest state average: about $119,090 per year. Someone earning $108,000 might be below the national line but still below the ACT average. In Tasmania, the state average is about $96,008, so the same $108,000 would be above the state average but below the national line.
States and territories have their own full-time averages: New South Wales about $109,658, Victoria about $106,137, Queensland about $106,064, South Australia about $102,450, Western Australia about $115,825, Tasmania about $96,008, Northern Territory about $103,173, and the ACT about $119,090.
When you use the calculator, you see the distance from the national line. If you want to compare to your state, you can look at the state averages page. The tool itself does not adjust for state – it is a single national line.
How Awards and the Minimum Wage
Awards set minimum pay rates for specific industries or occupations. The national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, $1,004.90 per week, about $52,255 per year on 38 hours. Award minimums rose 4.75% in the same adjustment.
If you are on the minimum wage, your salary is far below the national line. The calculator shows a large negative distance. Someone on a typical award rate might be around $60,000 to $80,000, still below the average. The line is the average, not the minimum.
Place a salary on the line to see how far you are from the national average. The tool accepts any yearly salary before tax. It shows the week and hour on a 38-hour week. It does not show a frequency switch, a login, or a tax return.
Using the Calculator for Your Situation
To get the most out of the Australia salary calculator, enter your salary before tax. The tool is for anyone who wants a quick comparison. The tool is not a tax return. It is a salary index.
Remember that the figures are set by the ABS, Fair Work, and the ATO. The average is ABS Average Weekly Earnings, May 2026. The median is ABS Employee earnings, August 2025. The minimum wage is Fair Work, from 1 July 2026.
If you are in a high-paying industry or state, you may be above the line. If you are in a low-paying award or region, you may be below. The calculator gives you a clear number.
Tax Context
Resident tax rates for 2026–27: nil to $18,200; 15% to $45,000; 30% to $135,000; 37% to $190,000; 45% above that. Medicare levy 2% before reductions. The calculator does not show tax, but it helps you understand where your salary sits before tax.
How the figures are set explains the methodology. The site uses the ABS survey for the line. The medians are from the Employee Earnings survey. The minimum wage from Fair Work.
Summary
The Australia salary calculator is a simple tool that uses the national full-time average. State and award differences can move your figure off the line. Use the tool to see where you stand.
