How the salary calculator Australia compares your pay

When you use the salary calculator Australia on this site, you enter your yearly salary before tax. The tool then shows your weekly and hourly pay on a 38-hour week, and tells you how far you are from the national full-time average. That average is $108,352 a year, or $2,083.70 a week, based on the ABS Average Weekly Earnings for May 2026.

But the national line is just one point of reference. Your actual pay may sit above or below it depending on where you work and what award or agreement covers you. This article explains why state and award differences can move your figure off the line.

The national full-time average

The ABS publishes Average Weekly Earnings twice a year, for May and November. The May 2026 figure for full-time adult ordinary-time earnings is $2,083.70 per week. Multiplied by 52, that gives $108,352 a year. This is the line the site uses.

It is an average, not a median. The full-time median from the ABS Employee Earnings survey (August 2025) is about $90,532 a year. The all-employees median is about $74,100. So more than half of full-time workers earn less than the average, because high earners pull the average up.

Men's full-time ordinary-time average is about $113,412; women's is about $100,594. The national line blends both.

State averages: why they differ

Each state and territory has its own full-time average, also from the ABS May 2026 data. Here they are:

  • New South Wales: $109,658
  • Victoria: $106,137
  • Queensland: $106,064
  • South Australia: $102,450
  • Western Australia: $115,825
  • Tasmania: $96,008
  • Northern Territory: $103,173
  • Australian Capital Territory: $119,090

These differences come from industry mix. Western Australia has a large mining sector, which pays high wages, pushing its average above the national line. The ACT has a high concentration of public service and professional roles. Tasmania has more hospitality and retail, which tend to pay less.

If you live in a state with a higher average, your salary might still be below the national line if you work in a lower-paying industry. The States and territories page breaks down each region further.

How awards set a floor

Fair Work sets the national minimum wage and award minimums. From 1 July 2026, the national minimum wage is $26.44 an hour, $1,004.90 a week, or about $52,255 a year on 38 hours. Award minimums rose 4.75% at the same time.

Awards cover specific industries and occupations. For example, the Hospitality Award has different rates for different roles. If you are paid under an award, your salary cannot be less than the award rate for your classification. That rate may be higher than the national minimum but still well below the national full-time average.

If you are on an enterprise agreement or an individual contract, your pay might be above the award. But the award still acts as a safety net. The national average includes people on awards, agreements, and above-award pay. That is why your own figure can be far from the line.

Tax and take-home pay

The calculator shows your salary before tax. For the 2026–27 year, the ATO tax rates are:

  • Nil on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Plus the Medicare levy of 2%, though some people qualify for reductions.

If you earn the national average of $108,352, your tax (including Medicare) would be roughly $25,000–$26,000, leaving about $82,000–$83,000 take-home. But that is a rough estimate; the calculator does not do tax calculations—it only shows the gross figures.

Using the calculator for your situation

To get the most out of the salary calculator Australia tool, enter your actual salary. If you are on an award, check your award rate to see if your pay is above the minimum. If you are in a state with a lower average, you may be below the national line even if you are above the award.

For example, a Tasmanian worker on $96,000 is below the national line, but if they are in a high-paying industry, they may be above the state average. The calculator shows that distance.

Why the line matters

The national full-time average is a benchmark. It helps you see where you stand. But it is not a target or a guarantee. Your pay depends on your industry, occupation, location, and agreement. The Job medians and Industry medians pages give more specific comparisons.

If your salary is below the line, it does not mean you are underpaid. It means you are in a role or region that pays less than the national average. If it is above, you may be in a high-paying sector or have negotiated well.

Summary

The salary calculator Australia uses the ABS national full-time average of $108,352 as its line. State averages range from $96,008 in Tasmania to $119,090 in the ACT. Award minimums set a floor that can be much lower. Your own pay will likely differ from the line because of these factors. Use the tool to see where you sit, and use the state and award pages to understand why.

Questions

How does the salary calculator work?

The tool accepts your yearly salary before tax and shows the weekly and hourly equivalent based on a 38-hour week, plus how far you are from the national full-time average. It does not ask for a login or tax return.

Why does my state's average differ from the national line?

State averages vary due to industry mix, cost of living, and local labour market conditions. For example, the ACT average is $119,090 while Tasmania is $96,008. The national line is an aggregate of all states and territories.

How do award rates affect my salary?

Award minimums are set by Fair Work and vary by industry and role. They rose 4.75% from 1 July 2026. Your pay may be above the award, but if you're on an award, it sets a floor that can be different from the national average.
