Understanding your salary with the salary tax calculator

If you have ever wondered how your yearly pay stacks up against the national average, the salary tax calculator on this site gives you a clear picture. Enter any yearly salary before tax, and the tool instantly shows you what that means as a weekly amount and an hourly rate, based on a standard 38-hour week. It also tells you how far your salary sits from the national full-time adult ordinary-time average.

The national full-time average is $2083.70 per week, or about $108,352 per year. That figure comes from the ABS Average Weekly Earnings survey for May 2026, multiplied by 52. It is the line on the chart that the tool uses as a reference point. If your salary is above that line, you are earning more than the typical full-time worker; if it is below, you are earning less.

The tool does not calculate your tax for you. Instead, it gives you the raw numbers so you can apply the Australian tax system yourself. For the 2026–27 income year, the ATO has set these tax brackets: no tax on the first $18,200, then 15% on income between $18,201 and $45,000, 30% on income between $45,001 and $135,000, 37% on income between $135,001 and $190,000, and 45% on anything above $190,000. On top of that, most people pay a Medicare levy of 2%, though some may qualify for a reduction or exemption. By taking your yearly salary from the tool and applying these rates, you can estimate your take-home pay.

How the weekly and hourly figures are derived

The calculator uses a simple formula. Your yearly salary is divided by 52 to get the weekly amount. That weekly amount is then divided by 38 to get the hourly rate. The 38-hour week is the standard full-time working week under the Fair Work Act. It is the same week length used by the ABS when it reports Average Weekly Earnings.

For example, if you earn $80,000 a year, your weekly pay is about $1,538.46 and your hourly rate is about $40.49. The tool will show these figures rounded to two decimal places. It will also show the dollar difference between your weekly pay and the national full-time average of $2,083.70. If you earn $80,000, you are $545.24 below the average.

The tool does not use a different week length for part-time or casual workers. It always uses 38 hours, because the comparison is to the full-time average. If you work fewer hours, your hourly rate may be higher or lower than the tool shows, but the weekly figure still reflects a full-time equivalent.

How the figures are set explains the methodology in more detail.

Comparing your salary to national benchmarks

The national full-time average is just one benchmark. The site also shows other important figures for context. The full-time median salary is about $90,532 per year, according to the ABS Employee Earnings and Hours survey for August 2025. That means half of all full-time workers earn less than that, and half earn more. The median for all employees, including part-time and casual, is about $74,100 per year.

The national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week, which works out to about $52,255 per year on a 38-hour week. That is set by Fair Work. Award minimums rose by 4.75% at the same time.

Men's full-time average earnings are about $113,412 per year, while women's are about $100,594. These are averages, not medians, and they come from the same ABS Average Weekly Earnings survey.

State averages also vary. For instance, the Australian Capital Territory has the highest full-time average at about $119,090, while Tasmania has the lowest at about $96,008. You can explore all state and territory averages on the States and territories page.

When you use the salary tax calculator, the distance shown is always from the national full-time average, not from the median or the minimum wage. That keeps the comparison consistent. If you want to see how your salary compares to the median or the minimum, you can do that manually using the figures above.

Tax considerations for your salary

Once you know your yearly salary from the tool, you can estimate your tax liability. The ATO tax brackets for 2026–27 are straightforward. For a salary of $80,000, the tax would be: $0 on the first $18,200, then 15% on the next $26,800 ($4,020), then 30% on the remaining $35,000 ($10,500), for a total of $14,520 before the Medicare levy. Adding 2% Medicare levy on the full $80,000 gives $1,600, so total tax and levy of $16,120. Your after-tax income would be about $63,880.

Remember that the tool does not account for tax offsets, deductions, or the low-income tax offset. It is a gross salary calculator. For a precise tax estimate, you should use the ATO's own calculator or consult a tax professional.

The salary tax calculator is designed to help you understand your pay in three simple views: year, week, and hour. It puts your salary on the line against the national average, so you can see where you stand in the broader Australian workforce.

Questions

How does the salary tax calculator work?

Enter your yearly salary before tax. The tool divides it by 52 to show your weekly pay, then by 38 (the standard full-time week) to show your hourly rate. It also calculates the distance from the national full-time average of $108,352 a year, based on ABS Average Weekly Earnings for May 2026.

What tax rates does the calculator use?

The tool does not calculate tax itself. For the 2026–27 year, the ATO tax rates are: nil on the first $18,200, 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000, 30% from $45,001 to $135,000, 37% from $135,001 to $190,000, and 45% above $190,000. The Medicare levy of 2% also applies, though some people may be eligible for reductions.

Does the calculator show after-tax income?

No, it shows your pre-tax salary as a year, week, and hour. To estimate after-tax pay, you can apply the ATO tax brackets and Medicare levy to your yearly figure. The site focuses on comparing your gross salary to national benchmarks such as the full-time average, median, and minimum wage.
